Caving Organizations

  • National Speleological Society (NSS) - The National Speleological Society is dedicated to the exploration, study, and conservation of caves and karst environments. Founded in 1941, the NSS provides resources, educational materials, and opportunities for cavers of all levels to connect and collaborate. They offer numerous publications, research grants, and organize various events such as the annual NSS Convention, which brings together cavers from across the country.

  • Northeastern Cave Conservancy (NCC) - The Northeastern Cave Conservancy focuses on preserving caves and karst areas in the northeastern United States. Founded in 1978, the NCC works through land acquisition, stewardship, and education to protect these natural resources. They manage several caves in the region, provide guided tours, and host educational programs to raise awareness about cave conservation and responsible caving practices.

  • Northeast Regional Organization (NRO) - The Northeast Regional Organization is a regional caving organization that promotes communication and cooperation among caving groups and individuals in the northeastern United States. The NRO coordinates events, projects, and conservation efforts, including the semi-annual NRO Regional Meetings, which serve as a platform for networking, sharing research, and planning joint initiatives. The organization also supports conservation efforts and provides training for safe and environmentally responsible caving.

  • National Caves Association (NCA) - The National Caves Association represents the interests of show caves and provides support for cave owners and operators. Founded in 1965, the NCA promotes the educational and economic value of caves, advocating for their conservation and responsible use. They offer a variety of resources for members, including marketing support, professional development opportunities, and an annual convention that focuses on best practices in cave management and tourism.

  • Canadian Cavers (Speleological Society of Canada) - The Speleological Society of Canada supports caving activities and cave conservation in Canada. Established in 1963, it fosters collaboration among cavers, promotes research, and provides resources for those interested in exploring and protecting Canadian caves. The society organizes national and regional caving events, publishes a journal featuring research and exploration reports, and advocates for the protection of significant cave environments.

  • CaveSim Organization - CaveSim is an educational organization that creates realistic cave simulations to teach people about cave safety, conservation, and science. Their interactive exhibits and programs are designed to engage and educate both children and adults about the importance of caves. CaveSim offers mobile cave simulators that can be brought to schools, museums, and events, providing hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the principles of Leave No Trace and responsible caving.
